How Long Does Waterproof Paper Last?

Waterproof paper is designed to survive conditions that would quickly destroy ordinary paper, but how long it lasts depends on how it’s made, how it’s used, and the environment it’s exposed to. Let’s take a closer look at what exactly goes into determining the lifespan of waterproof paper.

How Long Does Waterproof Paper Last?

In theory, waterproof paper can last nearly indefinitely when it’s kept in a perfect environment with no unforeseen issues. In reality, though, it can vary quite a lot depending on the circumstances it's being used in. This could be anything from often-used menus at a cafe to records and documents preserved on archival-quality paper. In general, we estimate that normally, waterproof paper can hold up for 5-20 years of average usage. The durability that waterproof paper offers allows it to last much longer than standard wood pulp paper.

Factors That Affect Waterproof Paper Lifespan

There are a number of different factors that will have a major influence on the overall lifespan of your waterproof paper. These include:

  • The type of material it’s made from (100% plastic or coated paper)

  • Exposure to UV rays (sunlight degrades plastics over time)

  • General wear and tear (folds, abrasions, tearing, etc.)

  • Chemical exposure (solvents, oils, or extreme heat)

  • The type of ink used (some inks fade faster)

How Waterproof Paper Is Made

Unlike regular paper, which is porous and hydrophilic (meaning that it absorbs water) because it’s made out of wood pulp, waterproof paper is able to resist water extremely well. There are two main ways in which waterproof paper is made.

Many types of waterproof paper are made entirely from polypropylene, polyethene, or polyester. These plastic fibres are exceptional for making paper out of because they are non-porous, do not absorb water whatsoever, and are much more durable overall than wood pulp fibres. Waterproof paper is also much more resistant to mould and bacteria.

Wood-based waterproof paper, such as the paper we have available at Any Weather Paper, starts off as regular wood pulp paper but is then treated with a polymer or resin coating afterwards, giving it all of the excellent properties that you would expect from this type of paper. While this is a little less durable over time than 100% plastic sheets, this treated paper is significantly better for the environment and will still last for a very long time if treated correctly.
